Europe Assignments

Good morning and happy last week before Spring Break. I can't believe there are only nine more weeks of school! This week we will be working on a Europe assignment. Each kid has been given a country that they are assigned and they are making books on their country. The top books will be selected to present to the primary school. The students with those books will get to read them to the students.

With our emphasis on Common Core, this is a great assignment that meets many standards. I have taken the time to list some of these standards. If you have any questions about the assignment or Common Core standards, don't hesitate to leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.2.A
Introduce a topic; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.2.F
Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from the information or explanation presented.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.6
Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Black Death Assignment

The Black Death assignment went great! It was a challenging assignment for many students, but we did an intensive amount of scaffolding and many of the kids understand the concepts of persuasive writing. I had a 99% turn in rate for the assignment and I saw some great writing. The kids have come a long way since the beginning of the year and are warming up to the common core concepts we are using in the classroom. Thank you for all of your help and hard work! Have a great weekend!

Next Unit

Our next unit is on the Black Death. Students received a large packet with graphic organizers, readings, and outlines that they will be working on over the next few weeks. This unit is part of the Idaho Core Coach program. I will be sharing select works with other teachers and state representatives in coming months. These assignments SHOULD be completed in class. If your student misses a day in coming weeks, please make sure they meet with me. This is a great assignment that the kids should enjoy, it addresses many core standards and it should be an interesting journey into their first attempt at persuasive writing.

Thanks,

Mr. Ballard
